Author Notes

One year.

The creation of Long Way Down was a goddamn saga, taking more than one year. It's the first story I've drawn with a full script, worked on for months while I was plugging away at Personal Spaces. Even after readjusting the dialogue and cutting out or condensing about fifty pages of story, it remains the most ambitious, tightly-plotted chapter in the comic.

Creatively and professionally, it was also the most brutal year so far. I don't want to say how close I was to quitting.

And it was in service to a story that was … challenging, to say the least. Probably at least as dark as No Survivors, it pitted protagonist against protagonist, asked some difficult questions with difficult answers, and has a deeply problematic ending that should make no one happy. It shifts genres as it goes along, presenting itself as a revenge thriller in the beginning before slowly revealing itself as a crime noir. (And I'm a sucker for a good revenge yarn, but the genre needed to be taken down a peg.)

It's not the sort of story you tell because you're gunning for popularity. It's the sort of story you tell because you feel it should be told.

But here I am. Here we are. At the end of the story.

And you can thank yourselves for that. I am. This story only got finished because there are people who are appreciating the work. As we neared the end and some of you had come up with interpretations entirely different from my own, or had become so invested in Nick's choices and their fallout … that was a balm. That was energizing. That kept me going when nothing else did. A story that I was worried would alienate my readers (and may actually have alienated some of them) still found its audience and engaged with them.

So where does EverydayAbnormal go from here?

First off, I'm taking a longer break than normal … it might be three months or so. I've got a lot of stuff I'm working that has just been on pause while I finish the chapter, and I need to get that done. In the meantime, though, I'll continue updating this space with short (in-canon) comics and little extras. And if anybody has any fanart or fanfiction, let me know … I'd love to show it off in this space.

So, the first extra will drop on Friday, November 6th! I'll see you then?

Thank you all, everyone. Your dedication and enthusiasm for this comic has gotten me through some dark days. Please let me know what you loved, loathed, or wanted more of in Long Way Down in the comments.

If you're curious who's speaking to Nick on the phone, do remember only two characters have had red dialogue balloons so far and one of them said peace out to Earth.

If you've noticed that scar on Lilith's shoulder, she picked that up waaaaaaay back in Out From Under Me when Mawa threw it at her when she was mind-controlled.

I'd hate to think anybody would think that I or this comic actually sides with Lilith's choices. Any of them. Good God.

Liliths taste in men is. . .questionable.

That is an incredibly charitable way of putting it. :P

At least Russell has some upsides, even if he is King Asshole ...
melaredblu 1st Nov 2015, 12:17 PM edit delete reply
I see he still has class to spare. Such a refined gentleman.
You're really counting on Nick to not find out? Yeah. Good luck with that.
Zomburai 1st Nov 2015, 4:53 PM edit delete reply
Well, he's right about one thing ... Nick is probably going to murder the fuck out of him. O_O

An author's work is not the author him or her self, even though it came from his or her brain.

My respect for you as a writer is soaring even as my respect for Lilith just dropped to near zero. (Her ranking is probably only temporary, but it's currently sincere.) I say it frequently, but the mark of a good writer is the ability to immerse the reader to the point of seeing the characters as real. You have done so. Even though I must, I can hardly wait for your return with the next chapter.

I agree with @melaredblu, but just to reinforce the second half of her statement, Lilith did not warn Nick that Russell was about to club him down, and Russell's words dripped of jealous possessiveness. If Nick is even half as astute as I think he is, Lilith may get a very nasty shock at her next attempt to "help" Nick.

Keep up the good work. :)

Those are some amazingly kind words, Delta :'D

And Nick is very astute, but he's also very single-minded ... if that single-mindedness doesn't keep him from finding out, he's probably going to be single-minded about feeding Russell his own heart.

The maiden cost you your job
The matron is screwing you behind your back
And the crone has died and left you behind

Poor little Red-Hand, you do have no luck with women, do you?

I wasn't even trying for a Triple-Goddess bit in this story, but I'm so happy that it's there :D

Damnit Lilith! I liked you... you were what's best for Nick... how could you?
Zomburai 2nd Nov 2015, 5:34 AM edit delete reply
From Lilith's position, I think she knows Nick would never go for an open relationship and she's probably enjoying the attention of someone who's not going to put a loaded weapon at her neck.

None of that keeps any of this from being the stupidest decision ever made by humans ...

I don't think she's acting like she just jumped into Russels bed... This has to be something from between the last two chapters.

I've just binge-read the entire series again, and I thought you were joking, but this chapter has actually been running for a year.
I"d like to quote Dr. Emmett Brown on that: "Great Scott!"
Zomburai 3rd Nov 2015, 5:35 AM edit delete reply
I don't think she did either, but cheating on Nick in general is probably the stupidest decision ever made by humans.

Yeah, and it shouldn't have been. Going to one update a week for those weeks just killed the update schedule. Never doing that again...

Well, the fact that I didn't realise this story has been going on for a year means that you've kept me interested in the comic ;)
There was a point where I got lost in the time jumps, but as a binge-read, it reads perfectly.

Nice babylon 5 reference, if on purpose. "Be seeing you" has some interesting connotations in that universe.
Zomburai 2nd Nov 2015, 8:35 AM edit delete reply
I haven't actually seen Babylon 5 (though I hear great things). It's more of a small The Prisoner reference, but mostly it's just a phrase that has some wonderful foreboding and menace to it.
CyberSkull 2nd Nov 2015, 12:30 PM edit delete reply
Babylon 5 was the best on TV at the time. There is a lot to learn about foreshadowing and structuring a story from that show.
Zomburai 3rd Nov 2015, 5:36 AM edit delete reply
I will have to check it out. Better twenty years late than never, eh? :P
CyberSkull 2nd Nov 2015, 12:29 PM edit delete reply
It was a prisoner reference wrapped up in B5's Earth conspiracy arc. ;)

*slow claps* Very nice work! And man, that ENDING. I kind of figured the storm was only beginning for Nick, but the part with Lilith truly shocked me. 0.0 Doesn't she know that Nick has ways of finding out anything? D:
